Elderly man dies after Elgin vehicle crash

ELGIN — An elderly man died following a crash Tuesday afternoon in which the pickup truck he was driving sideswiped a car and then struck a tree on the city’s west side, police said.
The identity of the 79-year-old victim was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
According to a release from the Elgin Police Department, the crash occurred about 12:05 p.m. at Airlite Street and Country Knolls Lane. A 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling north on Airlite when it sideswiped a 2010 Volkswagen Routan minivan, according to police. The Silverado then continued north on Airlite, where it struck a parkway tree on the west side of the street, police said.
The 39-year female driver of the Routan sustained minor leg injuries and was transported to a local hospital, police said. The driver of the Silverado was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the release said.
The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit was continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone with information pertinent to the crash was asked to call 847-289-2661.
