Ran from cops: Bail was set at $1 million Thursday for a South Elgin man accused of cocaine and marijuana possession. Michael A. Griffin, 33, of the 300 block of Mill Street, was charged with a Class X felony count of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church, a Class 1 felony count of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, two Class 4 felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and manufacture or delivery of cannabis, and misdemeanor charges of possession of cannabis and resisting a police officer. According to Elgin police, officers patrolling on Mark Avenue at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday saw Griffin, a known parolee. When one officer got out of the patrol car, Griffin ran, police said. An officer said he saw Griffin throw something behind a Dumpster during a foot chase, and that was later found to contain both marijuana and cocaine, police said. Griffin was assigned an Oct. 4 court date.
Shoplifting charged: Jannet Alvarado, 18, of the 300 block of Mountain Street, Elgin, was charged with a Class 3 felony count of retail theft following an incident Wednesday at Wal-Mart, 1100 S. Randall Road. According to police, Alvarado and a juvenile were seen placing seven bottles of liquor, shampoo and cold medication — a total value of $377.51 — into diaper bags and purses, and then walking out of the store before being stopped by security. Bail was set at $1,500, and she was given an Oct. 2 court date.
