The Citizens’ Advisory Council (CAC) of School District U46 is seeking community members and parents to join the volunteer organization.
The CAC advises and assists the board of education and administration in the ongoing effort to provide the best possible educational opportunities for students, according to a release from the district.
Those interested in joining the CAC can attend the group’s first meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Elgin High School Library, 1200 Maroon Drive.
“The CAC offers parents a great opportunity to have their voices heard, to advocate for their child’s education, and to effect positive change in their child’s school system,” CAC chairperson Mary VanSlyck said in the release. “The first step to improving our education system is to get involved in it. There are few other school systems that welcome such direct involvement from parents and citizens.”
For more than 50 years, the volunteer parents and community members of the Citizens’ Advisory Council have served as an advisory group to the District U46 Board of Education.
This year, the council will focus its work on curriculum, special education, family engagement, finance, facilities and legislative issues affecting education. The council meets once a month to share ideas and learn about how students are educated in the district.
The CAC welcomes all parents and interested community members who live in the district to become a member. Council representatives serve as liaisons between their schools and the council and district, representing the needs, ideas and concerns of their schools at a district level, the release said.
Each U46 school can have up to seven members represent the school. Representatives attend monthly meetings and are encouraged to join committees. Parents interested in representing their child’s school should contact their principal.
