ELGIN — A 37-year-old Elgin woman was shot in the face while jogging through a residential area Tuesday night, apparently by a sniper with a BB gun.
The woman told police she likes to work out at The Centre of Elgin, then jog to her home on Elgin’s northeast side. But at about 6:10 p.m., as she was jogging along Douglas Avenue near Cherry Street, she said she heard a pop and felt a sting close to her right eye.
The woman discovered she was bleeding from some kind of wound. She had a friend take her to the Elgin police station, from which paramedics took her by ambulance to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
At the hospital, police reported, a CAT scan discovered she had a spherical, metal, BB-like pellet embedded in muscle just above the eye.
The victim, who asked not to be identified, told a reporter Wednesday afternoon that the pellet hit her in the right eyelid and it was still embedded there.
She said surgeons are deciding whether to remove the pellet, or whether that would cause more damage.
“It happened so fast,” the woman said. “I heard the pop and thought, ‘Oh my God, I am hit!’ ”
But “I can see, and I thank God for that,” the woman said.
She told police that she could see no people or vehicles in the area when she heard the “pop” and she knows of no one with a grudge against her.
Police said that they could find no evidence at the scene of the attack.
