ELGIN — The annual Elgin Area Firefighters Memorial ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the George Van De Voorde Firefighter Memorial Park, at 533 St. Charles St.
Peter Van Dorpe will be the keynote speaker for the dedication this year. He is a 30-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department and is the chief of training.
Van Dorpe also is a lead instructor for the CFD Fire Officer School, teaches building construction for the fire service through the City Colleges of Chicago, and is a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute. He also has worked with Underwriters Laboratories and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The memorial is held each year to remember those who have served area communities and passed away in the previous year. Many Fox Valley area fire departments participate, and the Elgin Fire Museum will be open to the public. Fire apparatus also will be on display. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend, and the event will be held rain or shine.
