ELGIN — A motorist was killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Route 20 east of Shales Parkway, police said.

Police identified the victim Sunday evening as Alberto Dominguez, 24, of the 1100 block of Abbott Drive, Elgin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, Yadira Fernandez, 31, of the 1200 block of Borden Drive, Elgin, was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, police said.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on the four-lane highway as it crosses a bridge over railroad tracks, authorities said. A passerby called 911 after coming upon the crash, officials said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 1998 Honda Civic driven by Dominguez was westbound on Route 20 about a quarter-mile east of Shales Parkway when it spun into the eastbound lanes, police said. The 1996 Mercury Villager van driven by Fernandez was eastbound when it collided with the Honda, police said.

Police said the Honda was almost split in two by the impact of the crash.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, police said, and airbags deployed in both vehicles. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Route 20 was shut down from Shales Parkway in Elgin to Lambert Drive near the border of Bartlett for more than four hours during the investigation, according to Elgin police.

Although the crash occurred in Cook County, the site is near the Kane County border, and Kane County Emergency Management crews were on the scene assisting crash investigators.

The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 847-289-2661.
