ELGIN — One person was killed in an early morning fire Friday inside a mobile home on the city’s near west side, authorities said.
Authorities on Saturday identified the victim as Brendan Gallaghan, 36.
According to a release from the Elgin Fire Department, firefighters were called out just after 3 a.m. to Bueche’s mobile home park at 909 S. McLean Blvd. on as report of a mobile home there on fire. While one their way, they were notified that there may be an someone still inside the structure.
Firefighters found the Unit 14 mobile home engulfed by flames when they arrived.
“Elgin firefighters were forced into a defensive attack on the fire,” the release said. “Due to the large volume of fire, the fire had extended to nearby mobile home Unit 12.”
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly in Unit 12 and within about 45 minutes in Unit 14, they said. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found Gallaghan’s body inside Unit 14.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by fire department investigators. An official cause will be released by the Office of the Fire Chief when the report is completed, the release said.
The fire caused an estimated $70,000 damage to Unit 14 and about $5,000 damage to Unit 12, firefighters said.
