Gail Borden Library to get donation from Meadows family

Updated: March 28, 2013 6:43AM

ELGIN — A donation to the Gail Borden Public Library District from the family of Dr. Bob Meadows means not only will the teen center get its digital media studio, but also the first-floor community rooms will now have an official name, library officials said.

Library officials announced the donation Tuesday but would not say how much it is or why they were keeping the amount under wraps.

“We are so pleased that the Meadow’s legacy will live on inside this building,” said Library Executive Director Carole Medal.

“Harry Meadows had the vision that a library would be a wonderful community asset at this location. Dr. Meadows was a lifelong library user. It is so fitting that our community rooms will bear the Meadows name and that this gift will give birth to a fantastic new digital media lab, a place for creativity and learning. We sincerely thank the Meadows family,”

Once completed, the digital media center will be housed in Studio 270, the second-floor teen center that opened in January 2011. It will include suites for video production, sound recording, photography, design, game development, editing, and remixing, said Denise Raleigh, library director of community relations and marketing.

Gail Borden Public Library has had a relationship with the Meadows family since the late 1990s, when the library district began negotiating the purchase of the land it sits on from the Meadows family. The library site at 270 N. Grove Ave. was the longtime home of W.R. Meadows Inc., the company founded by Meadow’s parents, Bob and Edna, Raleigh said in a prepared statement.

The company moved to Hampshire in 1998, when the old location at Kimball Street and Grove was razed.
