Auroran gets $400,000  in tollway crash settlement

Home security company ADT has agreed to pay an Aurora woman $400,000 to settle a 2011 lawsuit tied to a crash on Interstate 88, according to the woman’s attorney.

Annabel Avila was driving east to work on the tollway on Oct. 8, 2010, when she attempted to avoid a white van that suddenly swerved into her lane. Avila’s maneuver caused her to lose control of her vehicle, which flipped and eventually collided head-on with another vehicle.

Avila suffered serious leg and arm injuries, attorney Mario Palermo said in a press release on the settlement this week.

Witnesses to the crash weren’t immediately able to identify the company logo on the van.

However, during the course of the lawsuit, Palermo contacted drivers who went through a nearby toll plaza and could be identified by I-Pass records. One driver confirmed the van had an ADT logo, Palermo said.

ADT and its driver, denied he cut off Avila in traffic to cause the crash.

A spokesman for ADT could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. ADT settled the case without admitting any wrongdoing.
