Steak-loving burglars break through roof of Elgin supermarket, take money & meat

Updated: February 11, 2013 7:25AM

ELGIN — Elgin police are searching for three suspects who broke into Armando’s Supermarket, 925 N. Liberty St. (Route 25), just before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The burglars — identified through video images as three men — took cash from six drawers and stole an unknown amount of skirt steak from the store’s meat counter, police said.

Officers were called to the market at 3:09 a.m. on the report of a burglary alarm sounding at the store. Police said they found a southeast door to the building open and a ladder propped against the building’s east side.

According to police, a metal vent on the store’s roof appeared to have been kicked in, and that is believed to be where the three suspects entered the building.

Police viewing surveillance video saw the three men take stacks of meat from the meat counter area and saw the suspects remove cash from the drawers.

Police said an alarm sounded when the burglars entered the store’s office area and the men then left the store, leaving bag of sugar and skirt steak behind on a counter.
