ALGONQUIN — Fire officials reported Wednesday that a man and a dog were killed overnight in a house fire at 4780 Iroquois Road.
Battalion Chief John Knebl of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District said a neighbor noticed the home burning and called 911 at about 11:11 p.m. Tuesday.
“First-arriving crews were on the scene at 11:15 and found a single-story ranch-style home with smoke and fire showing,” he said. When the neighbor said he believed that an elderly man was still inside, Knebl said, “Fire crews immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack and discovered a fire that had already burned through the floor of the single-story home.”
He said an elderly man was found in the wreckage and he “died on the scene.” Searchers also found a dead dog. The man’s name was not released.
Knebl said local fire department investigators as well as some from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office were still on the scene Wednesday morning and had not yet determined the cause of the fire. Fire officials also had not yet estimated the value of the damage.
No firefighters were hurt.
Knebl said mutual aid came from Huntley, Crystal Lake, Barrington, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Cary, Fox River Grove, McHenry, Woodstock, West Dundee and Rutland-Dundee fire departments.
