CARPENTERSVILLE — A 21-year-old Crystal Lake man was killed and another person seriously injured when a car hit a tree along Route 31 in Carpentersville early Wednesday.
Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the crash occurred about 12:35 a.m. in the 0-100 block of North Western Avenue (Route 31).
On arrival, he said, officers and paramedics found a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta occupied by two male adults, both suffering from significant injuries. Carpentersville paramedics began immediate treatment at the scene and subsequently took both people to Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
The 21-year-old driver was later pronounced dead by hospital staff, Bosshart said. The car’s passenger remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon with injuries not deemed to be life-threatening.
Police did not immediately release the victims’ names.
Bosshart said preliminary investigation has determined that the Jetta was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when, for reasons unknown, it left the roadway and hit a large tree. Police continue to investigate this accident to determine a specific cause and whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
