Child welfare workers probe infant’s death

ELGIN — Child welfare workers are investigating allegations of abuse and neglect against the parents of a 9-month-old Elgin girl who died Friday afternoon.

Jillian Kalous was found unresponsive at her home in the 700 block of North Lyle Avenue in Elgin on Oct. 29, authorities said.

She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has launched an investigation into allegations of abuse and neglect against Jillian’s mother and father, agency spokesman Dave Clarkin said.

DCFS received a hotline tip regarding the allegations on Oct. 29, Clarkin said, and officials took custody of Jillian’s sibling within 24 hours.

This is not the first time Jillian’s parents have faced allegations of abuse and neglect. On June 25, DCFS officials found similar allegations to be substantiated, but a Kane County judge ordered Jillian and her sibling returned to their parents, authorities said.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said Saturday afternoon that detectives are aware of the case and were treating it so far as “a death investigation,” not as a homicide case. He said investigators were awaiting results of an autopsy Saturday.

The medical examiner’s office later said the autopsy was inconclusive, pending results of further studies.
