ELGIN — A 19-year-old man has been charged with organizing the burglary of his mother’s and stepfather’s Elgin home with the help of two friends. And after those three split up the loot, police allege, the two friends got together with two other men and broke into the home again, this time stealing a safe.
Police said a man and woman who live in the 1100 block of Championship Drive went on vacation last month. When they returned Monday, they discovered someone had broken open a rear door and stolen numerous items from throughout the house, including its safe.
The couple told police they immediately suspected the woman’s 19-year-old son, Ryan D. Boehler of Roselle, who they said has been banned from the house, police said.
According to a police document submitted in court Friday, Elgin detectives brought in Boehler for questioning on Wednesday and he confessed that he had decided to break into the house because he needed money to retrieve is car from a towing service and he knew the house would be empty. Boehler allegedly told detectives that he recruited Devin J. Ortega-Flight, 19, of Crystal Lake, and Malibu Barstow, 17, of the 600 block of South Third Street in St. Charles, to help him, police said.
Boehler reportedly said the trio broke in on Monday by forcing open a door and stole such items as a Kindle book reader, a watch, a PlayStation 3 console and two purses. They divided up the loot, police said.
Police said they then took in Ortega-Flight and Barstow for questioning. They allegedly said that after they separated from Boehler, they rendezvoused with two other men, returned to the Elgin home, broke in again and stole the family’s safe. Investigators did not disclose what was in the safe.
Each of the three men were charged Thursday with one count of burglary. On Friday, a judge set bail at $45,000 for Boehler and at $60,000 for Ortega-Flight and Barstow. They were all assigned Nov. 16 court dates.
