HUNTLEY — A Rockford man has been charged with Thursday’s hijacking of a taxi cab and injuring taxi driver in a mall parking lot here, police said.

Christopher L. Mackey, 31, was charged with vehicular hijacking, robbery and aggravated battery.

Huntley police said Mackey had gotten in to the cab in Hoffman Estates on Thursday morning and requested a ride to Rockford.

Along the way on I-90, he asked the driver to stop at the Prime Outlets Mall, 11800 Factory Shops Blvd., Huntley.

The cabbie told officers that as he pulled into the north lot of the mall near Route 47 and I-90, his passenger, later identified as Mackey, struck him in the neck with a pen and pushed him out of the vehicle, according to police.

He then drove off in the stolen cab, taking with him an undetermined amount of money, the driver said.

The 30-year-old cab driver suffered puncture wounds to his neck and was transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment of injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Area police agencies were notified, and the cab agency used a GPS locator to track the cab.

It was tracked into Rockford, where police found it abandoned near the intersection of Locust and Main streets. Huntley investigators went to Rockford to process any forensic evidence and retrieve the cab, reports stated.

Working with the Rockford Police Department and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, suspect information was developed and leads were followed, Huntley police said.

About 8 p.m. Thursday, Mackey was located and taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies in Rockford and was turned over to Huntley police and was awaiting a bond hearing in Kane County Court on Friday.
