Man dies from crash injuries

Updated: November 8, 2012 12:18PM

An Elgin man has died from his injuries following a Sept. 30 crash. Thomas Merwin, 57, of the 100 block of Russell Road, Elgin, died Friday at Rockford Memorial Hospital, Elgin police said.

Police were called to Russell Road and Winding Hill Drive at 5:10 p.m. Sept. 30 for a single vehicle crash. Police believe the 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on Russell Road when it left the roadway, rolled several times and ejected Merwin from the vehicle near Winding Hill Drive. He was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Hospital with significant injuries and airlifted to Rockford following the crash.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash as Merwin’s blood alcohol level was over twice the legal limit, police said. This is the first alcohol-related fatal crash in Elgin since 2009.

“While we have had very few alcohol related crashes in recent years, one is still too many,” Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Elgin Police Traffic Unit at 847-289-2661.
