Updated: November 2, 2012 6:17AM

A home in Algonquin was badly damaged in a fire Saturday evening that brought fire personnel from six area departments to the scene. Firefighters from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District were dispatched to a structure fire at 5 Filip Road at 6:31 p.m., a release from the fire protection district said. When the first crews arrived five minutes, later they found heavy flames and smoke pouring out of the single-family home, and the fire was already through the roof. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack but changed to a defensive one when it became apparent that the roof would collapse, according to the release. The residents were not home at the time of the fire, but two cats were home and they were found safe at the scene and turned over to the residents when they arrived back home. No firefighters were injured. Fire crews remained on the scene for three hours investigating the fire and securing the home. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and a damage amount was not yet available. Assisting were fire personnel from Carpentersville, Huntley. Crystal Lake, Barrington and Cary. McHenry County Animal Control also assisted at the scene.
