Updated: October 17, 2012 6:28AM

Petitions for candidacy for the 2013 Elgin municipal election are available in the city clerk’s office in city hall, Room 202, 150 Dexter Court.

The Elgin City Council will have five council member seats open in the election in 2013; four for four-year terms, and one for a two-year term.

Qualifications to hold the office of council member include being a registered voter in Elgin, a city resident for at least one year prior to the election, and not in arrears in payment of taxes or other indebtedness due to the city.

Nominating petitions must be filed with the clerk’s office no sooner than 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, and no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26. Names will appear on the ballot in the order of filing.

A primary election will only be required if more than four electors file their candidacy for the two-year term or more than 16 electors file their candidacy for the four council terms up for election.

If a consolidated primary election is needed, it will be held Feb. 26, 2013. The general election will be held April 9.
