ELGIN — Distracted driving is cited by police as the likely cause of a head-on crash that seriously injured three people on Route 31 near I-90 Tuesday night. All three were hurt seriously enough to be transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Police said a car driven by Emily Nufer, 27, of Niles was southbound on Route 31 at about 5:15 p.m. when she crossed the concrete median strip into the oncoming lanes just south of the eastbound entrance ramp to I-90. Her car crashed into a car driven by David Sifuentes, 21, of Marengo. Sifuentes’ passenger, 27-year-old Joel Flores of the 400 block of McClure Avenue in Elgin, also was injured.
Police said Nufer will be cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Northbound Route 31 was closed until about 7:30 p.m. as the wreck was cleaned up and accident reconstructionists investigated what had happened.
