Hurricane Isaac, currently cutting a path through the Gulf Coast states, could affect the Labor Day holiday in the Chicago area with thunderstorms and heavy rain.
The eventual remnants of Isaac are expected to move northward into the mid-Mississippi Valley by Friday, then move slowly northeast through the holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Tropical remnants are often capable of producing torrential rainfall, according to the weather service, and there remains a great deal of uncertainty as to how north the heavy rainfall will move, but it may reach northern Illinois and northwest Indiana over the weekend, the weather service says.
There is also a chance of thunderstorms forecast to spread north late Friday afternoon into Saturday, and then move east on Sunday. The weather service notes though that the threat for severe weather is low at this time.
The high temperatures in Chicago on Thursday and Friday are expected to be in the mid-90s, according to the weather service. Labor Day is expected to be partly cloudy, with highs in the mid-80s. A slight chance for thunderstorms returns next Tuesday.
