Man convicted of Elgin cabbie robbery

A 22-year-old man has been convicted in the 2011 armed robbery an Elgin taxi cab driver.
Aaron A. McGee of the 400 block of Belmont Street, Elgin and also of Milwaukee, was found guilty by a jury this past week of two counts of armed robbery, each a Class X felony.
According to prosecutors, on May 8, 2011, McGee and another man summoned a cab, which drove them to the 300 block of Princeton Avenue in Elgin.
McGee got out of the cab to pay the cab driver for the ride. The second man remained in the cab. As McGee returned to the cab, the second man squirted pepper spray at the cab driver’s head and fled.
The victim got out of the car and McGee then placed a handgun to his back, demanded the victim’s cash and threatened to shoot him.
After a short struggle the victim ran away, and McGee entered the cab and took a bag that contained the victim’s cell phone. McGee threatened to kill the victim and then fled, authorities said.
During the investigation, police found the cell phone number that initially was used to call the cab and traced it to McGee. When interviewed by police, McGee acknowledged his role in the robbery and said he had planned to rob the driver when he called him, according to police.
Circuit Judge Timothy Q. Sheldon set McGee’s sentencing for Sept. 5. McGee faces a sentence of between 21 and 45 years in prison.
“Our thanks to Elgin Police Det. Brian Gorcowski for his thorough investigation and his hard work in bringing this defendant to justice,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.
The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Alexander Bederka and Mark D. Stajdohar.
