Route 31 lane closures slated in Elgin

Updated: July 13, 2012 6:16AM

ELGIN — Look for some rush hour traffic jams this week on Route 31 (State Street) as the city makes repairs to the busy north-south thoroughfare.

Repairs by Elgin’s Public Works Street Division will require lane closures on the street, “which may hinder travel times during rush hour,” a press release from the city noted.

Work was scheduled to start at 5 a.m. Tuesday with repairing the section of road on State Street just south of Frazier Avenue, where a water main broke in the summer of 2011 that resulted in the closure of State Street. During the repair, Public Works Traffic Division staff will be shifting all traffic to the northbound lanes of 31, with one lane open in each direction as crews repair the two southbound lanes. Traffic will be back to normal by rush hour Tuesday evening, the release said.

Starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, staff will shift traffic to the southbound lanes of Route 31 to repair the northbound lanes of the street. This repair will take two days, so traffic will be reduced to one lane each direction all day Wednesday and Thursday as well as overnight Wednesday, according to the release.
